This sixty second commercial for the Kia Soul was named "Automotive Ad of the Year" by Nielsen in 2009, and won a 2010 EFFIE award as the most effective ad in the "David vs. Goliath" category for smaller or up-and-coming brands. It debuted in movie theatres in March 2009, and moved to television in May.

The commercial opens with a long shot of a suburban subdivision. Cut to: a street in the subdivision, all the houses look the same. It's early morning, no people are out and about, there are no cars on the street. Then a single garage door opens, but instead of a car, inside the garage is a large hamster exercise wheel (large, as in, the size of an automobile). The human-sized hamster in the wheel starts it up, starts running. But the wheel isn't free, it's fixed to an axle. You see several shots of the commuter route into a more urban center, but there are no cars anywhere, just lots of hamsters and their exercise wheels, not moving forward, but running in…

Gigantic mutant rodents that caused a viral sensation in 2009 through 2012 as they drove Kia Souls in television commercials. Standing up to six feet tall, and weighing in at an incredible 63 pounds (estimated), these adorable furry freaks of nature turned out not only to be aficionados of urban crossover compact vehicles, but musical tastemakers (soul, hip hop, electronica) and quite accomplished breakdancers.

The Soul hamsters first appeared in a 60-second spot in 2009, entitled "A New Way to Roll," rolling down the windows of their new Kia Soul to share their music with the rest of hamster society. In 2010, "This or That" featured the hamsters not only getting funky as they drove the streets of the inner city, but lip-syncing to hip-hop. The navel orangeworm, Amyelois transitella, is not a worm.

It's a caterpillar, or more specifically, the larval form of a phycitid moth.

It is considered an agricultural pest, which, despite its name, is not known for its damage to navel oranges (although it has been known to lay its eggs in the navel end of these). NOW (as entomologists and farmers like to abbreviate it) is a serious pest damaging almonds, walnuts, and pistachio crops.

NOW will also attack figs, pomegranates, and citrus fruits, but where I live, in California, it does not appear in citrus groves, preferring instead to go after the bountiful (1 million acres) of nut trees in the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys.

Navel orangeworms invade the nut, damage the meat, and if left undetected long enough, consume the entire nut, leaving a shell filled with frass and webbing. Though a typical infestation may typically damage only a small…
