A few people have asked me to respond to Lucy-S's message above, and it deserves a response. I have been a long time admirer of her writing here, a purchaser of her books, and an admirer from afar. I'm only responding to the issues regarding the ad system. The question of who is or is not a content editor is up to Jack and katherine (with temporary help from Apatrix) and the MSU/BSI team has a long term hands off policy.

Let me say that I haven't spoken with either nate or kurt about this, although I plan to. What I'm talking about here is more clarification and what I hope to be able to talk my BSI collaborators into.

Let me say clearly that I think Lucy-S is right, and the people who have contributed to this community should have the ability to advertise on this site. In fact, we've always been (I thought at least) pretty supportive to the projects of noders, making announcements on front pages, linking to websites and whatever we could do outside…

Draft Everything2 Terms of Service response (person)

Hi all-

I wanted to give you an update on where we stand on this.

katherine and Jack are sorting out the feedback the community has given. My sense is that we have two possible directions, with a chance to mix the two:

Go back to the old way. We'd have to add the DMCA stuff (as we just had yet another case of someone posting proprietary content on E2), but otherwise just stick with "Be Cool".
Hire an honest-to-goodness lawyer to work on the ToS with the following injunction: Protect the authorship of the writers.

Heyoka is still chiming in regularly on the process, and we've all read the various comments people have made. I doubt there's any way we can make everyone happy. My main goals are to maintain the rights of the users, and to protect the volunteer editors from harassment. Those should be your main goals too.

So that's where we stand right now. We're taking a deep breath. I know it's tempting…

Remember it? Superman 1? Richard Donner? Some beautiful cinematography. There's a scene where Superman is first appearing, and a plane is in trouble. Two of its engines are out, and Superman has to support half the plane? "Don't look, just fly."

That's like E2 right now, but without Superman. We've blown another web server, which means we are two down. I blame the draft Terms of Service. Nate and I have a plan to fix it all (trust me, you don't want to know) but the site may experience, ah, erratic service over the next couple of days.

OK, I want to answer gnarl's questions and comments here, because he summarizes some of the misconceptions and issues that have surrounded this process. I'm just going to answer this from a large-scale view, since I think some of the specific points raised are covered in Draft Everything2 Terms of Service response. I would reiterate that the terms of service are a working draft.

His summary of the process:

"The only reason for having Terms of Services for this site is because the owners (presumably) would like the new features listed here to be implemented, and turn E2 into a media rich product."

Nope. The Terms of Service are a noder-generated deal. Here's the whole history of it. Some evil noder (no, not you, another evil noder) posted something that belonged to someone else not on the site. Today is my birthday.

Each year on my birthday, I like to take a little inventory. How's it going clampe? What's the good word? You doing what you're supposed to?

Right now, just at this moment (and I'm sure it'll get better in a little bit), this life doesn't seem worth it. I'm not the man I want to be. I'm working too hard and it doesn't seem worth it.

The person most important to me is crippled by miniscule amounts of chemicals in her brain. Some days she's her, and some days she's a different her. I wake up every morning not knowing if I have to summon the inner strength to keep two souls afloat, or if I can show the smallest amount of weakness. I am totally in love for almost 20 years, and each day it gets harder. and harder. until I know that someday will break and love will spill from me like tar and I'll be left as empty as the drum my grandparents used to burn garbage in. I've never given up on anyone. Ever. And that's going to kill me.
