Last night, I dreamed of California ...

So, settle back and indulge me in a bit of rambling … a few nights ago, I was enjoying reading Eric’s many Facebook postings about his adventures in California. I got a bit nostalgic, being reminded of when I did much the same thing over 30 years ago. I arrived in the Bay Area, a green kid from Kentucky, all of 18 years old and just out of high school. I hadn’t been any farther west than ... well ... western Kentucky, and California in 1975 was like another planet. Friends told me, much later, I often had this look of perpetual wonder on my face.

I had adventures ... oh yes, and plenty of them. I couldn’t get enough of everything California had to offer. When I look back now, all that seems as if it happened to another person, or I read about it somewhere. I have to remind myself that I did live that life.

Fast forward to 2005, and I’m on one of my semi-regular visits back to the old…

Well, here we go again! Autumn’s on the way and that means only one thing: time for another E2 Nodermeet out here on the prairies of Illinois! This is your official invitation to . . .

Children of the Corny 6: INTO THE WOODS!

September 3 - 6, 2010 • Heyworth, Illinois

Into the woods the noders go
What will they do? Nobody knows!
Into the woods the noders go to have a geeky week-end

Into the woods the noders go
To talk and drink/but mostly drink
Into the woods the noders go where no one else can find them!

Perhaps a game/of Carcassonne?
Before you know it, the weekend’s gone!

A node is just words
We vote up or down . . .

Well, "they" say a 10-year anniversary is a good time to look back, to see where you’ve been and try to see where you’re going. Tom and I celebrated our 10th year together last year by … well … me trying to remember the exact date and not succeeding! We laughed, enjoyed some happy memories of the years, but mostly congratulated ourselves on having made it that far. Many couples and organizations don’t, and sometimes if they do, they find they’ve become something quite different than what they were.

I think E2 can do all those congratulatory things, and bask in the glow of still being what it set out to be: a place for writers to write. Has it changed? Of course – there’s a thriving community now, and the noder population has settled down into a fairly committed group of talented writers that still welcomes new users. E2 still provides that place for writers and would-be writers, a place to learn to write and write well.

Well, I had no idea this node existed on E2, but I’ve had a lot of fun reading the writeups. I was born in the eastern part of Kentucky and grew up in the west, in a small town near the old Confederate capitol of Kentucky, Bowling Green.

Consequently, I’ve heard, and used, many of the sayings and slang in these writeups. However, I remember some that my late mother said frequently, that I don’t see anywhere here. Now, Mama’s people originated in England, Somerset to be exact, but they emigrated to America in the late 1500s and morphed into pure Kentucky stock. I’m not at all certain of the origin of these sayings, but I have heard some of them from others with whom I grew up. Imagine most of these said in a slightly indignant tone of voice …

“You’ll shit if you eat regular, too!” -- This one’s a little hard to explain. Let’s say I had this conversation with Mama: …

Well, silly me, I must be some kind of a dolt. You see, when Barack Obama was elected, I thought perhaps we’d emerged from our long nightmare, and that reason and civility might return to the public discourse. I hoped I might be able to cease apologizing for being an American, and that my country and government and fellow citizens might no longer be the laughing stock of the known universe.

What was I thinking? For example, the recent debates over health care reform have proven me wrong, so wrong. That alone would be enough to dash my hopes, but there’s something else (and I’m not referring to “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina” Gov. Mark Sanford).

I’m talking about the so-called “Birther Movement”. You know, the wingnuts that are convinced that President Obama wasn’t born in the United States, but in Kenya, and is therefore disqualified from the Presidency. At last count, 53% of voters in…

See, even though the dates aren’t exactly correct, we’re celebrating the 5th anniversary of our marriage in Toronto (2003) and the 10th anniversary of moving into our house here (1999).

Not only that -- let's work in E2's Tenth Anniversary as well!

And more -- October 17th is the 20th anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earthquake, which I remember well!
