I recently did something that I have wanted to do for a long time - join a political party.

Anyone who knows me well, knows that I swing towards the right side of politics - especially how I view the economy should work. You know, free markets and minimal government intervention in business (yes, I agree with how John Howard dealt with the Ansett Australia collapse, despite how painful it was). However, this is a fair unpopular position for someone my age and it causes me quite a bit of flack. Being Australian, this means I vote for the Liberal Party - and have done so for the four times I have been called up to vote.

Unfortunately for me, my 18th birthday coincided with the downfall of the Liberal Party in federal politics, so every time that I have voted the party has had crushing defeats (well, except in the Brisbane City Council elections). It is a tad upsetting.

After the interest shown with How to Eat at McDonald's, with consultation with some readers - it is now time for a follow-up. This time, from the other perspective.

I hope to cover not only how to successfully 'deal' with customers, but on how to develop within your store and how to 'deal' with your bosses. What you learn from being an employee at McDonald's will benefit you in all future dealings with both customers and employers. Of course, all the advice applies to similar business establishments.

I do not represent my employer. Also, I will not claim I follow my own advice all the time. Sometimes enough is enough and it is fun to push the hard line with a customer. Of course, to do this you need to be ready to pay the cost. I have been spat on, had drinks and burgers thrown at me, and had my life threatened on numerous occasions. Ah well.

There are many ways to improve your eating experience when at McDonald's which will not only benefit yourself, but more importantly me, the manager of the place. Some of these 'tips' will only apply at stores that have introduced the MFY (Made For You) cooking platform and the SFS (Split Function Service) system, commonsense is the name of the game here.

Front Counter

First of all, get in a line in front of a register that actually has a person serving at the register. The fact that the store has 3 registers is irrelevant if there are only 2 people serving - we will not open the third register just for you. There are many reasons for this, lack of staffing or weak kitchen crew being the primary examples. If there are only 2 registers open there is always a good reason - typically opening it will make service slower for everyone.

Here is a heads up - the register closest to the fry station will typically have the best counter person on it. If…

Ah Stelazine, or to be technically correct Trifluoperazine, what an interesting & nifty drug.

This is not a factual node about the history of Stelazine, but rather some recollections of my fairly frequent consumption of this little pharmaceutical and the benefits and trouble that it has got me into.

First of all, this is a drug primarily used to fight schizophrenia - a condition that I do not possess. However, it has proven its usefulness as an anti-anxiety drug, and I have plenty of that. So my doctor after putting me on various courses of Remereon, Valium, Zoloft, Xanax and Ambien decided to give the little blue pills a shot.

Just a little tidbit of information of breaking eggs with one hand.

In my 'profession' (*cough* McDonald's Manager *cough*) it has become necessary for me to crack eggs. When I was younger and lower down the ladder I spent every weekend cracking eggs for 4 hours, so I have gained quite a knack for it. The top write-up is quite accurate, but I feel it has has overcomplicated quite a simple action. So please, enjoy....

Step 1

Having eggs to cook is fairly important. Preferably fresh, as rotten eggs won't result in a good quality meal. At all cost avoid finding an egg that contains a chicken embryo. Seeing one pop out when all you were expect white and yolk scares the bejesus out of you - plus it ruins your rhythm.
