And what a time it was,
It was...
A time of innocence,
A time of confidences.
Long ago...it must be...

Greetings Gentle Noders,

Surprisingly, our Making Cocoa for Kingsley Amis reappeared in my mailbox recently after almost a three year hiatus. The only clue is a cryptic, " July 2009. Found this, can't remember where? Judy NYC USA"

Where we left off:

Making Cocoa for Kingsley Amis was launched on January 15th 2003 and retired on September 1, 2006.(See the daylog for an explanation.) It made its way around the world from Canada, across Asia, took a passage through Europe and began a quest from the eastern US. Unfortunately it never made its way beyond this point. As of the visit with toalight the total mileage was 27,831 miles.

Even though the doctor confirmed the 85% probability of it the day after Number Two Son's graduation, Hubby is out there in the kitchen doing the dishes as I type this yelling,

I CAN'T DO THIS BECAUSE I HAVE A BAD KIDNEY!!!

It makes me laugh—every time.

We will tell our sons on Monday.

I'm hear to say that the Good Old Boys club is alive and well in spite of any group of women who would care to call themselves feminists or even feminazis for that matter.

My husband has been suffering from some sort of lung ailment for well over a year now. The good ole boy docs will tell ya it's only been nine months. It's taken them twelve months to discover a lesion on his kidney.

About 15 years ago, when I started teaching at a local Catholic school I asked Hubby to put some cup hooks in the ceiling so I could hang the kids work from them. Later the principal told me that the ceiling (and floor tiles ) were made of asbestos.

Guess what the epidemiology for kidney tumors are for asbestos exposure? First the lungs and then the kidneys. They are still trying to say it's valley fever, even though there has never been a positive test for it.

Meanwhile I have to put on my happy face because Number Two Son is graduating from college this week.

As we wandered in the front gate of the county fair we spied the traveling version of the Vietnam Memorial Wall. Dad and I were excited to see it there, standing a mere 4 feet or so high, it stretched down the fence line until it was out of sight. At first its diminutive presence was a let down, still I wanted to look up Sgt Lancaster and headed down the black line, impossibly trying to take in all of the names. After a few moments we both stopped, Dad stood reluctantly with his hands in his pockets several feet away from it. We both know a lot of names on that wall and somehow we just could not bring ourselves to go any further on that warm spring day.

To hold the same views at forty as we held at twenty is to have been stupefied…

We were only there for a few days when an incoming typhoon caused us to be evacuated down the side of a treacherous mountain and then off to Kadena Air Base, Japan where we spent a few days at the Visitor's Quarters dining on C-rations while the wind and rain whipped around furiously. Soon we were on a ship following the tail end of the typhoon to Singapore.

The great paradox of the military," writes Wertch" is that its members, its self appointed guardians of our cherished democratic values, do not live in a democracy themselves. Not only is individuality not valued in the military, it's discouraged. There is no freedom of speech, save on the most innocuous levels. There is no freedom of assembly for anything that is not authorized. There is not even a concept of privacy as civilians understand it, for in the military the distinction between public and private is…
