An expression describing an instance of being stubborn. The image is that someone is trying to pull you in a direction you don't want to go, so you dig your heels into the ground, making it more difficult to drag you anywhere. Example: "A lot of people in South Carolina don't really care whether the state house flies the Confederate flag, but when someone says it should be taken down, they just dig their heels in and won't hear of it."
