weak verb

A weak verb, especially in Germanic languages, is one which forms its past tenses by the addition of a suffix to the present tense stem. Examples:

English:
stop -> stopped
walk -> walked

Swedish:
sy -> sydde (To sew)
skratta -> skrattade (To laugh)

The closest thing Latin has to weak verbs are verbs of the first and second conjugations, and a majority of fourth conjugation, which experience a change of ending, but no vowel change in the stem.

Oppose strong verb.
