stop bit

In serial communications, a stop bit is an extra bit transmitted after each unit of information (usually a byte) to indicate that transmission of that unit is complete. For example, RS-232 devices are commonly configured to transmit an extra 1 after each byte which is understood by the receiver to be a stop bit rather than forming part of the actual data.
