University (and not to my knowledge elsewhere), you achieve a "starred first" by passing with
first class honours
at both "
Mods
" (mid-course exams) and in
finals
of a bachelor's degree. Often wrongly understood to mean a particularly high score in finals (cf. the fatuous "A*" grade in
A levels
).
