A contest of skill in medieval and Elizabethan England, which apparently suffered from a severe scarcity of pastimes. Participants would all smoke a pipe of tobacco. The first person to finish it would be declared the winner. A variation is too see who can take the most time to finish the pipe. The prize was usually a small item, often a tobacco pouch, ironically enough. |
