Self-
emulation
is a technique used to run a computer's
program
s in a
control
led environment on the same computer. There are two ways it can be done:
Full emulation. Each instruction is
interpret
ed.
Bochs
does this. Machine-level
debugger
s on machines without privileged instructions do this.
Virtualization
of
privilege

instruction
s. Instructions are executed
native
ly until a
General Protection Fault
occurs, which means the program being emulated tried to execute a privileged instruction. This is faster than full emulation;
VMWare
uses virtualization.
Both methods require some extra
random access memory
to hold the emulated chip's
