The proj box is the name that is often given to the box at the back of a theatre where the lights and sound are operated from. The name derives from the time when theatres used to double up as cinemas, when the proj box would be where the projector is kept and operated from.
A lot of the time, sound engineers prefer to be outside the proj box, as the mainly glassed in front of a proj box doesn't help very much when trying to hear exactly what is coming out of the speakers. If this is the case, then there are often other spots near the back of the auditorium where the sound engineer can go.
