Also known as the "lytic" or "DPT" cocktail, this is a common recipe used by doctors to sedate children. It should be noted that it is incredibly difficult to sedate children and the dosages of the following medications, used proportionally in adults would be enough to tranquilize an elephant. The cocktail is most often used in the emergency room to sedate an injured child, or perhaps one who has stuffed a marble up one of any number of orifices.
The standard DPT cocktail consists of:
Demerol (meperidine)
Phenergan (promethazine HCl)
Thorazine (chlorpromazine)
In addition, many physicians will throw in additional drugs as the physician's tolerance level for hysterical children (and parents) dictates. These agents can include any combination of the following:
Cocaine
Morphine
Ketamine
Codeine
Versed (midazolam)
Valium (diazepam)
Chloral hydrate
