People of sephardic jewish descent who were forced into baptism during and after the Spanish Inquisition. Those who continued to practice their ancestral religion in secrecy were called crypto-jews. The first jewish community in North-America was made up of 23 new-christians escaping Inquisition terror in the city of Recife, Brazil.
