Added to closets in hopes of preventing moths from chewing up sweaters. The smell of napthelene.

From this practice comes the phrase "putting (something) in mothballs," meaning storing it away for a day when it will, hopefully, be useful again.

Things "put in mothballs" were once slathered in cosmolene; weapons for example.
