For those who don't know, a loch is the Scottish name for a lake. Listed below are some of the major lochs, with brief notes on their locations and other features. (Lochs in bold are already noded).

• Loch Arkaig - This loch branches off to the west of Loch Lochy


• Loch Assynt
- Located in the northwest Highlands, north of Ullapool

• Loch Awe
-This loch is located near Oban, south of Ben Cruachan

• Loch Boisdale - Sea-loch on the coast of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides


• Loch Bracadale - Sea-loch on the coast of Skye


• Loch Broom - Sea-loch with Ullapool on its shores - ferries for Stornoway sail along it


• Loch Clunie - This loch is west of Fort Augustus, and is one of two connected to Loch Ness by Glen Moriston


• Loch Dunvegan - Sea-loch on the coast of Skye


• Loch Earn - This loch is west of Crieff and Perth, and lies just south of Loch Tay


• Loch Eck - Small loch just north of the Holy Loch


• Loch Eil - This loch branches off the Great Glen of Loch Linnhe and the Caledonian Canal at Fort William


• Loch Eriboll - A sea-loch on the north coast, near Durness


• Loch Ericht -North of Loch Rannoch, on the Rannoch Moor


• Loch Erisort - Sea-loch on east coast of the isle of Lewis, just south of Stornoway


• Loch Etive - Runs from north of Oban alongside Ben Cruachan


• Loch Ewe - Sea-loch at the head of Loch Maree, on the west coast of the Highlands


• Loch Fannich - Inland loch east of Loch Maree


• Loch Faskally - This loch lies beside Pitlochry, and is fed by the river Tay


• Loch Fyne - Sea-loch running from the northern end of the Mull of Kintyre to Inveraray, home of the Duke of Argyll at Inveraray Castle


• Gairloch - Sea-loch on the west coast of the Highlands, west of Loch Maree, and opposite northern Skye


• Gare Loch - Sea-loch on the Firth of Clyde, with Faslane submarine base nearby


• Loch Glass - West of the Cromarty Firth in Easter Ross, close to Dingwall and Inverness


• Loch Goil - Offshoot of Loch Long, leading to Lochgoilhead


• Holy Loch - Sea-loch at the Firth of Clyde, home to a US nuclear submarine base, and the resort town of Dunoon.


• Loch Hourn - North of Mallaig, opposite Skye across the Sound of Sleet


• Loch Inchard - Sea-loch in the north-west corner of Scotland, just south of Cape Wrath


• Loch Katrine -The source of Glasgow's drinking water, in the Trossachs just north of Ben Lomond


• Loch Laggan - East of Loch Lochy


• Loch Langavat - Inland loch of the isle of Lewis


• Loch Laxford - Sea-loch south of Loch Inchard on the north-west coast


• Loch Leven - Near Glenrothes in Fife, with Kinross on its shores. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned on Castle Island here


• Loch Linnhe - Sea-loch with its mouth at the islands of Mull and Lismore, and Fort William and the Caledonian Canal at its northern tip


• Loch Lochy - The southern loch in the Caledonian Canal which links it to Fort William in the south


• Loch Lomond - One of the most famous of Scottish lochs, site of Scotland's new national park and many tourist facilities and activities. The loch is near Glasgow, with Balloch on its shores.


• Loch Long - a very long sea-loch, as its name suggests, stretching north from the Firth of Clyde


• Loch Loyne - south of Loch Clunie, and fed by Glen Moriston, west ofFort Augustus and Loch Ness


• Loch Maree - One of the largest lochs in the northwest Highlands, a favourite of Queen Victoria


• Loch Monar - This loch is west of Inverness, in the northwest Highlands


• Loch Morar - The town of Mallaig is just north of this loch


• Loch More - This loch is in the far northwestern corner of Scotland


• Loch Naver - This loch lies near Tongue on the north coast of Caithness


• Loch Ness -Probably Scotland's most famous loch, and certainly its deepest - supposed home of the Loch Ness Monster, Nessie. Urquhart Castle is on its shores, and Inverness is nearby


• Loch Oich - The small loch in the middle of the Caledonian Canal


• Loch Quoich - Inland loch lying east of Mallaig


• Loch Rannoch - This loch lies in the beautiful but bleak Rannoch Moor in the Grampian mountains


• Loch Scavaig - Sea-loch on the coast of Skye


• Loch Scridain -Sea-loch on the coast of Mull


• Loch Sheil - This loch has Glenfinnan at its head, and lies west of Fort William. Glenfinnan was where Prince Charles Edward Stuart raised his standard to begin the 1745 Jacobite rebellion. A National Trust monument commemorates the event. There is also a striking railway viaduct here.


• Loch Shin - Very long loch in the northern Highlands


• Loch Slapin - Sea-loch on the coast of Skye


• Loch Snizort - Sea-loch on the north coast of Skye


• Loch Sunart - Sea-loch in Morvern, between Loch Linnhe and Mull


• Loch Tay - Near Crianlarich, with Kenmore at its head


• Loch Torridon - Sea-loch opposite Skye


• Loch Tummel - Lying west of Pitlochry, Queen's View above this loch was another of Victoria's favourites


• Loch Vennacher - This loch is in the Trossachs, near Aberfoyle and Callander
