In the segregated American South of the early and mid 20th century, a juke joint (sometimes spelled "jook joint") was a black saloon and music hall. The white equivalent was the honky-tonk. Many famous blues musicians got their start playing in juke joints. A few juke joints still exist today in rural areas.
