| French for learned idiot. Refers to a type of autism where an individual has extraordinary ability in one particular subject, such as maths or music, but is otherwise developmentally disabled. An example of an idiot savant from movies is Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man. Although still in common usage, the term has been replaced amongst psychologists by autistic savant. |
