French term that literally translates as false friends.
In linguistics/translation/etc., the term refers to words in two separate languages which bear a superficial resemblence to each other, but which actually have quite divergent meanings. (Often due to cross-language semantic drift of cognates; ie. a similar word is found in two related languages, but in Language X it soon takes on another meaning, quite different from the meaning of the similar word in Language Y.)
One example, that my French translation professor was overly fond of, is the French sentence "Il ne peut pas supporter sa femme" - which an unwary translator might think is equivalent to the English "He cannot support his wife" but actually translates as "He cannot stand his wife". |
