A label for shares, which when traded on the stockmarket, do not carry the entitlement for the buyer to receive the next dividend payment. The seller will receive the dividend payment.

"ex" means without.

Usually the share ex dividend is at the lower price than cum dividend, as the market adjusts the value of the shares traded after the ex date.
