delivery that lets the content speak for itself. thus, deadpan humor is often so ridiculous - either absurd or sarcastic - that no special emphasis or timing in delivery is necessary. the complete monotone underlines this, making it possibly funnier for listeners once they realize what they're hearing is a joke.

but that's just my theory.
