An illness in newborns caused by a viral infection; symptoms include fever, cellular enlargement, microscopically-visible clumps of viral particles or proteins in the cytoplasm and nuclei of affected cells, enlargement of the spleen and liver. Long-term effects of the disease may include mental retardation.
