Canonify is the process of making something
canonical
. In computers, it can mean "making something conform to a standard" or "getting at the root of something".
For example, if you want the
FQDN
(Fully Qualified Domain Name) of an
IP address
or non fully qualified domain name, you might use
DNS
to canonify the IP address or non fully qualified domain name in order to get the FQDN.
Canonify is often used when describing
email
processing. For example, if a local user sends an email to "jane", the
mail server
has to canonify the address "jane" into a proper email address ("jane@host") before it can decide how to deliver it.
Canonicalization
has the same meaning as canonify, and may actually be the more popular usage.
