Oryctolagus cuniculus, the European or Domestic rabbit, has several litters of 5-6 young each year. Sexual maturity occures at about eight months of age, giving rise to yet more rabbits. In the wild this wouldn't be excessive, as rabbits are comparatively r-selected. But in protected domestication the population increase is plenty enough to impress the unsuspecting pet owner.
