A filmmaker who has near-complete control over his or her film. Auteur (which comes from the French word for "author") usually implies directing and often includes writing as well. Auteur has a certain pretentious-art house edge to it. Famous auteurs include Woody Allen, Francois Truffaut and Federico Fellini.
