A proposed new currency for Argentina, which will circulate alongside the peso and the US dollar. Or at least, that was the intention; it was announced by President Adolfo Rodriguez Saa in his seven days' presidency in December 2001. It was not explained how it would work, what it would be backed by, or what its rate against the peso (which is fixed at par with the dollar) would be. President Rodriguez said argentinos worth USD 10¹⁰ would be printed initially.

Some provinces had already effectively abandoned the peso and were dealing in government bonds; Buenos Aires province has a local currency called the patacon, launched in August.
