X-Men 2

(Subtitle "Clone Wars".) Platform beat-'em-up based on the Marvel comics, developed by HeadGames for the Sega Mega Drive and released in 1995. It is unique in that it is the only game on the system that does not start up with company logos, legal info or an introduction - it drops you straight into the first level as soon as the machine is switched on. (But don't worry, true believers, the traditional Sega logo and title screen appear after this level is completed - albeit on the screen of Cerebro.)

A very stylish game indeed, with chunky, well-animated sprites and passable use of sampled sound. Six fine upstanding mutants are available as playable characters (Beast, Nightcrawler, Gambit, Wolverine, Cyclops, and Psylocke). They all have markedly different characteristics, and can use their special powers. The plot is unknown to me at this time, bar that it involves Sentinels, and lots of them. The game has a lovely feel, both in the atmosphere and the controls - it's certainly the best (and most extensive) use of the source material yet seen on console, of not the best game.

PS: I will add to this writeup if I manage to get through the game. Stay tuned.
