The most interesting topic in the book is covered in the first chapter, "The Book of the Grotesque". In this chapter, an old writer is writing a book about those people which he calls grotesque -- people who see all the truths in life and yet hold onto only one or two truths as their own. He says truths are pretty much any type of quality a person can have -- a person can be funny, serious, faithful, etc. Anderson says people become grotesque when the truth starts to define the person. The rest of the book goes on to describe some people in the town of Winesburg, Ohio who have become grotesque, and why they have become as such. |
