Why you should understand the tools you use

Or at least if you don't understand the tool you are using, use it by the book. If you want to try to make the tool better or use it for something that it was not designed for make sure you know how it works.

I heard a story once about a successful autocrosser who was pretty much a god behind the wheel. Well he didn't understand thing one about the inky black magic that went on beneath his DSM's hood. Well he had someone else modify his car for him and they had put in an electronic boost controller one that could be adjusted from the cabin. Well I guess he played with this enough to figure out that more boost = more speed so he put the boost as high as it would go. Well what happened to him next can be described with one word. BOOM! Detonation is a bitch and she ripped him a new one.

Moral to the story: Understand your tools.
