There's an idea similar to the one about the Antarctic explorers who in their exhaustion felt there was always one extra amongst them. It's said that when you're in a room at night, and the interior of the room is reflected in the windows cos it's dark outside, the number of people you can count in the reflection will be one more than the number of people actually in the room.
