Louis Pinnock (John Travolta) is a man working for a chocolate factory owned by Thaddeus Thomas (Harry Belafonte) and family. One day he is asked to deliver a package to Thomas, and accidentally sees Mrs. Thomas emerge from a shower. This leads to the loss of his job by an overreacting family member.
Pinnock, being the sole working member of his household, is forced to find another job. However, he has a great deal of trouble, especially after getting beaten by (black) cops because of his resemblance to a suspect.
Pinnock, in desperation, decides to abduct Thomas at gunpoint.
The main selling point of this movie was the race reversal. It portrays a world where white people populate the inner city, and black people control most wealth. It could perhaps be used as a barometer as race relations. When it becomes shocking to all for portraying a person undergoing such economic hardship and despair, rather than a white person, we will have come a long way. |
