Wharfinger was no Shakespeare

created by Mr. Hotel

(idea) by Mr. Hotel (1.5 wk) (print)   ?   (I like it!) 3 C!s Tue Oct 10 2000 at 22:56:43

A quote from Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49 referring to Richard Wharfinger, author of the fictional Elizabethan b-play The Courier's Tragedy.

The play is a poorly written, confusing drama that seems, from the brief plot outline in the book, like Hamlet turned out as soon as the monkeys were finished.

The full contents of the quote are as follows:

"You came to talk about the play," he said. "Let me discourage you. It was written to entertain people. Like horror movies. It isn't literature, it doesn't mean anything. Wharfinger was no Shakespeare."

At no point in the book are Wharfinger's Javascript coding abilities discussed, but I guess we can speculate.
