A Cheech and Chong film that uses this term for when something combusts and is altered from a useful and meaningful state to one that has either dissipated or reduced to rubble. Ones dreams may go 'up in smoke' when an action beyond control changes expectations, or when a housefire destroys all of an individuals worldly possessions.

It could be said that Cheech and Chong's joints, marijuana cigarettes, ganja mobiles and monster weed cannons have pretty much gone up in smoke.. yet they are left giggling.
