In the game, the player takes the form of an avatar in the dream world. There are nightmares to fight, which are the only NPCs present in the game. The game promotes social interaction (see digital crack) by allowing arts (skills) to only be passed down from players to players. Those who can attribute arts are known as teachers, and assign a task to be performed in order to receive what the student desires. These tasks are usually centered around promoting further interaction in the community, learning of rules, and learning of the history of Underlight. 

Furthermore, one can join any of eight houses or remain a free soul by not joining any.
