| Trompe Le Monde was released in 1991 on 4AD/Elektra in both the US and the UK (by now the US was aware and appreciative of the Pixies). Sadly, this, their fifth album, was the last, leaving fans to wonder where they could have led the world of rock 'n' roll.
According to a great (my favorite) Pixies website, Alec Eiffel, www.multimania.com/alec/index.html, the phrase "trompe le monde" may be a variation on two existing French phrases, "trompe-la-morte" and "trompe-l'oeil", which refer to stuntmen and images that seem to be real from afar, respectively. The second theory was confirmed later by the magazine Melody Maker.
Thanks to ideath for reminding me: "Trompe le monde" translates literally from French into "fool the world," which could certainly be taken at face value.
