Peace treaty concluded between France and Austria on October 17, 1797.
In acceding to the treaty, Austria ended its involvement in the War of the First Coalition (1791-1801), ceding the Low Countries and the Ionian Islands to France, and Milan, Mantua and Modena to the Cisalpine Republic. A secret article gave the Austrian emperor Venice and all Venetian territories.
The Treaty of Campo-Formio ended the Italian campaign of Napoleon (1796-1797) and set the stage for his unorthodox Egyptian campaign (1798-1801). |
