Tonic (short for tonic water) is a carbonated form of mineral water high in quinine, which gives it both its anti-malarial properties and its extremely bitter taste.

Currently the primary experimental jazz club in New York. John Zorn, Marc Ribot, and Uri Caine frequently appear, as do many others with albums on Tzadik or Winter & Winter. The quality and variety of acts is insured by Tonic's booking policy, in which such artists as Susie Ibarra, Alan Licht, Sonic Youth, Vernon Reid, Arto Lindsay, and Zeena Parkins curate the schedule for a month at a time. The club is located on Norfolk St. in the Lower East Side, and prices are quite reasonable.
