Concept devised by Kim Stanley Robinson in his (her?) Mars science fiction trilogy to allow colonists on the planet Mars to accomodate the longer day and night. At midnight, Mars timepieces would "hold still" to allow for the extra length of the Martian day. This had the effect of creating a free hour -- similar to the free hour gained on the night of conversion from Daylight Saving Time to Standard Time.
