The Threadtm was created at WPI, on the newsgroup wpi.test, by a man known to most only as Ranalou. Ranalou created The Threadtm as a way to alleviate some modicum of boredom from his evening, on April 12, 1996. The Threadtm is still going strong today, having had 5 birthday parties in it's honor, in approximately this format for follow up:
