It is imperative to point out that Tengwar is not a language of its own, but is the letters that represent the Elven language of Quenya (And most other Elven dialects). Tengwar was devised by the most gifted of the Children of Ilúvatar, Fëanor, and is counted among the greatest of his works.

(Cainen...Debian...Connection?)

In relation to our system of numbering, Tengwar is backwards. The most important digit is on the right; so 546 would be written as 645. Esthetically speaking, Tengwar is a marvelously flowing and beautiful script. It's been said that it is somewhere around three times easier to write in Tengwar than in modern Arabic scripts.

A good mnemonic for four, if you know some Japanese, is to remember that "shi" means four in Japanese, and the Tengwar digit four looks like hiragana "shi". (Is this a coincidence?)

More Tengwar digits, if I can remember:

   Zero: Eleven:
                     @
                      @
                   @ @
   @@@@ @ @
  @ @ @ @
       @ @@@@
       @ @
  @ @ @ @
   @@@@ @@@@

Tengwar had two number systems, decimal and duodecimal. Which base was in use was indicated by means of special markings which I cannot remember.
