Originally came to notice in 1986 with the publication of her first book, "Slaves of New York", a group of bitter, funny, stylish inter-linked stories about New Yorkers.

Janowitz shot to fame and gossip column attentions as one of the media-friendly lit pack (that included other bright, young, mouthy, celebrity american writers like Bret Easton Ellis and Jay McInerney.)
