As with any
rifle it will often need to be taken apart and put together again for a number of reasons, be it to clean the weapon,
oil it, replace a faulty part or to ensure everything is in working order. Before this is possible the person must first be aware of how to take the weapon apart and how to re-assemble it without
damaging the weapon or the user.
This node will cover the procudure of how to take the
L98A1 Cadet GP Rifle apart
safely and how to put it together
correctly.
Stripping the weapon
Before anything is done to the rifle you must ensure that the rifle's
sling and
magazine is removed aswell as to check that there are no
rounds in the
chamber.
Bear in mind that this is easiest whilst sitting down cross-legged and always having a part of the rifle resting on your thighs. Also if you're outdoors whilst you are doing this you may want to put a
poncho/
groundsheet down to prevent your parts getting dirty, unless you're on concrete. Having done that you are now ready to strip the weapon down for whatever need you may have.
1. Press the
safety catch on making sure that it reads 'S' for 'safe'
2. Next pull to the
cocking handle back and release it forward to pull the
hammer back. This is necessary if you want to be able to put your rifle back together again without any problems.
3. Turn your rifle over so that the cocking handle now faces towards your body and then push the
rear Trigger Mechanism Housing pin (TMH pin) out so that only 1-2mm of it remains in the rifle. You do the rear on first so as to relieve pressure on the front TMH pin and to make it easier for removal.
4. Now push out the front TMH pin and turn the rifle so that the base of the pistol grip now faces toward the sky/ceiling.
5. Placing your left hand just 5mm (approx) from the base of the
butt, pull the
pistol grip slightly left and up and it should now be held in your right hand. Place the part in your right hand down on the ground with the TMH pin sticking out facing upward.
6. One of two things will have happened in your left hand. The spring will have fired out into your hand or it will still be empty. If the spring has already sprung into your hand get a grip of it and place it down on the ground. If it hasn't come out yet, pull the rear TMH a bit more and it will then come out.
7. Place your left hand back at the base and tilt the weapon now so that the
muzzle is facing upwards. The bolt carrier assembly, the big metal block, will now fall to the rear. Pull the left end of the
extension rod up and pull it to the left.
8. Place the
cocking handle on the floor and the bolt carrier assembly will now fall into your left hand. Plaace this on the floor and the other half of the rifle body on the floor with the TMH pin facing upwards.
Your rifle is now stripped and ready for
inspection, cleaning etc.
Re-assembling your rifle
1. Pick up the half of the rifle body with the
stock at one end and place it on your lap.
2. Pick up your cocking handle and extension rod and slide it on to it's
runners.
3. Keeping the cocking handle on it's runners lift the extension rod and drop the bolt carrier assembly into the rifle body with it
orientated correctly and
the parts protuding out of it. Place the lifted extension rod end into the bolt carrier assembly and hold in place.
4. Place your spring into the rear of the bolt carrier assembly and then push the rear TMH pin in so that it lies in the lip and doesn't go fully in. You can now let go of the extension rod as it will not fall out now.
5. Pick up your other half of the rifle body and glide it into place into the stock by leaning it into the stock and then pushing it down
6. Now push your front TMH pin fully in and do the same with the rear TMH pin. Your rifle is now correctly assembled.
