Hundreds of years ago, when Spain ruled a large part of the Americas, the land bordering the Caribbean Sea was known as the Spanish Main. Later the Caribbean Sea itself was often poetically referred to as the Spanish Main.
The Caribbean was the main route which Spanish ships took when returning home, laden with silver and gold, from the Americas. It followed that it became "a happy hunting ground" for pirates. |
