Satiny, bias-cut slip dresses were stuck on waifs and superstars all through the 90's. This was an extention of the "underwear is outerwear" trend started by Madonna and her bustiers. They often required wearing a body suit underneath to reduce how transparent they were.

They sucked for girls who were anything over a b cup. You couldn't wear a bra with these. We all know duct tape does not make a good bra.
