Sleeping Madness
is the title of
Ken Ishii
's fifth full-length album (not counting
Flare
albums), released in 1999. There were two versions of this album released: one contained a bonus 3-inch CD with two extra tracks (including one featuring
Deckwrecka
), the other without. In Japan, it was released on
Sony
, and in Europe by
R&S
Records. It's around this time that Ishii starts incorporating some DJ tricks into his production, especially with his Easy Filter releases as
FLR
. The cover features Ishii dressed in white, asleep on a floating white plastic chair.
Tracklisting
Kaotic Khaen - based on the sounds produced by a Southeast Asian instrument called the
Khaen
Misprogrammed Day
1,2
- This track begins with a simple four on the floor kick, then adds some bongos, making it easy to mix into. This is the first appearance (that I know of anyway) that features Ishii's new trademark "happy bee" synthesizer, which was also used in Flatspin, to such length that I first thought Flatspin was a Misprogrammed Day remix. Ishii says this track is meant to portray a day where everything is a slight bit in the weird category, hence "misprogammed".
Where is the Dusk?
1
- a breakbeat number
Enso Online (with
DJ Spooky
That Subliminal Kid)
3
24-bit Optimist - the name of this track comes from the hope Ishii has for the future, stemming from advanced technology (namely, 24-bit digital recording)
Bugged-in Fusion - this track begins with a variety of computer voices repeating the mantra "bugged in fusion". According to Ishii, Bugged-in Fusion is the fusion of technology and humanity that has become unavoidable. It's also the name of his clothing line.
Water Dripping From the Middle of the Forehead (with
Talvin Singh
)
Game Over
(with
Co-Fusion
)
4
- this track features Co-Fusion's dirty breaks a bit slower than usual.
Missing Melody
Sleeping Madness - this is an updated disco house track, complete with theremin and warped guitar samples.

All of Us (featuring Deckwrecka)
I regard Sleeping Madness as a true techno masterwork. It really depresses me that nobody seems to have heard of it.
