| Sharon Apple, a character in the anime OVA series Macross Plus, was a "virturoid idol": a computerized persona created to be the perfect idol singer. Her concerts were elaborate interactive holographic works of art, engineered to match the emotional response of the audience. Unbeknownst to the adoring public, however, Sharon was not initially an independent personality: her own emotional responses were supplied by her "manager", Myung Fang Lone.
When Sharon's producers fitted her host computer with a contraband bioelectronic processor, she became capable of independent emotion, but remained imprinted with Myung's loves and obsessions. The result (avoiding too many spoilers) was tragedy.
Interesting note: Sharon's computer case -- black with a single red camera eye -- seems to be intended as a reference to HAL 9000. |
