Longinus the centurion was a soldier in the Roman army at the time of the crucifixion. He pierced the side of Christ with a spear to see if he was dead. Some of Christ's blood got into his eyes, curing his partial blindness. He was instantly converted and spent the rest of his life as a monk. See also Lance of Longinus.
