Royal Jewellery Museum

created by Helen4Morrissey

(place) by Helen4Morrissey (2.5 d) (print)   ?   (I like it!) Thu Apr 11 2002 at 13:04:32

One of the prize attractions of the city of Alexandria, Egypt. Formerly one of King Farouk's palaces, it now houses a stunning collection of jewels from Mohammed Ali's early 19th century rule until the 1950s.

Some of the items on display are shockingly gratuitous signs of the extreme wealth of the Egyptian royal family. For example, there is a coffe cup holder made from gold and diamonds, and even an ashtray encrusted with rubies. Stepping back into the street after a visit to this museum is quite a shock.
