| This is one of the most circulated pieces of RIT folklore. It is one of two pieces of RIT folklore explaining why RIT is so freakin windy.
The story maintains that the campus was designed to keep winds out, so as to not make it too cold in the winter. Unfortunately, the land that RIT was able to purchase was of such a shape that they were forced to rotate the campus 90 degrees to fit it on the property. In doing so the wind currents worked in reverse and this is why the campus is so damn windy.
Granted, the campus does get very windy, especially during the winter, but I doubt this story has any shred of truth to it. First, RIT has a large plot of land and I'm sure they could have oriented the campus any way they want. Secondly, would rotating the campus 90 degrees really cause it to be so windy?
