Psyence Fiction

U.N.K.L.E 1998 album by: DJ Shadow, James Lavelle. Additional personnel: Thom Yorke, Mike D., Jason Newsted, Richard Ashcroft. In the UK, where both electronica and brash guitar rock are bigger chart-toppers than in the US, artists are a lot freer about mixing the two styles. Hence UNKLE, the project of James Lavelle and illbient hero DJ Shadow. The duo puts their sampling/looping expertise to work in the service of a project that blends the best of Britrock and electronica, without sacrificing the integrity of either style. Towards this end, they're assisted by some talented friends. Radiohead singer Thom Yorke cowrote and sings "Rabbit In Your Headlights," which takes his band's sound and runs a little further afield. The Verve's Richard Ashcroft is on hand for "Lonely Soul," which links syncopated drum loops, midtempo rock and extended orchestral sections. PSYENCE FICTION is a fresh-sounding effort that pushes the boundaries of both rock and electronica in a way that will appeal to fans of both genres. --from a review that I lost.

The Japanese version of Psyence Fiction conatains an amazing hidden intro that can only be found by rewinding the first track into the "zeroth" track. This tune, which is presumed to be named "Intro (Optional)" as opposed to the "Mandatory" Outro, is entirely composed of samples, mostly from hit singles. The samples seem to go backward in time, and the quality of the tracks sampled is simply amazing -- many of these are among my favorite songs. It's like a history of famous samples and samplers. One listen to this two and a half minute tribute to great music reminds me of the immense joy and wisdom pop music has brought me in my life. Jesus, just looking at the titles makes me shiver:
